AIM AND PLEA OF THE CHURCH

We, the Disciples of Christ, wishing to be in complete accord
and agreement on the doctrine of the church, set forth the
following which has been the slogan of the church for more
than 100 years.

General Aim of the Church

Restoration of the New Testament teaching and Practice.

Plea of the Church

No creed but Christ, no book but the Bible, no name but the Divine.

Where the Bible speaks, we speak.

Where the Bible is silent, we are silent.

In essentials Unity, in non-essential Liberty.

In all things Charity

ABOUT US

Church History

Goddard Hill Church of Christ was founded in 1898 by Preston Powell, who was a slave.

Coming to Martin county in 1882 he located in the Williams Township.  He acquired two acres of land in which he gave for a church site.  He did most of the work on the building and served the congregation faithfully and continuously since it was built.  He named the church Goddard Hill.  This was also a school.

He was married to Polly Ann Powell and they reared 14 children of their own and provide a Christian home for several orphans.  He had over 100 grandchildren, 75 great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren.

Pastor Powell preached the Word for several years at Goddard Hill.  After him Elder David Griffin became the leader of this church where he preached until his health declined and death.  Over  time Pastor WC Lyons, Pastor Joe Bell, and Minister Shelia Keyes ministered to the congregation.  After the death of Elder Griffin the church voted to get a new pastor and that was none other than our present pastor —  Elder Melvin Bunch.

Elder Bunch has been here at Goddard Hill since January 1990 in which he has served faithfully.

At present we have 152 members and  steadily growing both physically and spiritually.
